Decadent Indian Desserts

Winter is the perfect time to indulge yourself and enjoy a decadent dessert. Whether you are dining in a restaurant, at your home or at the home loved ones, it is the ideal opportunity to be a little bit naughty and enjoy a dessert.

The cold weather puts many of us in grouchy moods, the thick grey cloud of anxiety can be lifted with the help of a delicious pudding to round off the meal. The warming sensation of a sweet treat can eclipse the foul mood imparted upon us by the cold climes. With their sweetly unique tastes and crumbly textures; desserts from Indian Cuisine are the perfect recipe for the winter months. Here are five of the best desserts to order at an Indian Restaurant this winter.

Kheer

Rice puddings are a staple of many cultures and their desserts. Thick, warming and sweet, they are the perfect climax to any hearty meal. The Indian spin on the rice pudding is best exemplified in Kheer. Simmer until it becomes a thick paste in sweet fruit and slight spice flavours. Pistachio nuts and almonds sit amongst the taste sensation to add a slightly salted taste that offsets the sweetness perfectly.

Coconut Burfi

Coconut flavourings feature heavily in Indian desserts. The culture favours the exotically sweet taste that the flesh of the nut can impart. Coconut Burfi works perfectly both as an ideal climax to a warming meal or as a stand-alone snack.  The bite-size nature of the Coconut Burfi allow for ease of consumption lending itself perfectly for simple snacking. The thickened milk that makes up the basis of this delicacy creates a creamy base for the coconut flavours to sit atop.

Peda

Peda shares a number of similarities with Coconut Burfi. Made again with thickened milk (white khoya) the Peda is a small creamy bite-size snack. Eschewing the coconut sweetness of the Burfi, Peda incorporates almonds and pistachios to create a slight crunch and salty taste experience.

Shrikhand

Built around a yoghurt base, Shrikhand creates a delicious and creamy dessert. Half a cup of granulated sugar helps thicken the yoghurt into a luxurious gloop. Cardamom and saffron add a wonderfully elegant spice to the thick taste. The cleansing taste helps to clean the palate after a meal rich in flavour.

Boondi Ladoo

Small, sweet and fruity dough balls; Boondi Ladoo creates an explosion of flavour when bitten into. Fluffy flesh inside a soft crispy case creates a captivating mixture of textures that perfectly house the subtle fruity flavours.
